2020 OIV award in the wine law category

The international panel of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine Award awarded the 2020 OIV prize, in the wine law category, to the collective work of authors - "Marques vitivinicoles et appellations d’origine - Conflits, mimétismes et nouveaux paradigmes" (Wine brands and designations of origin - Conflicts, mimicry and new paradigms), edited by Théodore Georgopoulos for Mare & Martin.

On 8 September 2020, the OIV international panel, made up of the scientific and technical elite from several OIV member countries awarded 19 OIV awards and 10 special mentions among 30 nominated publications, including 27 books and 3 websites.

The chair of the panel, Azélina Jaboulet-Vercherre, as well as the scientific secretary, Richard Pfister, thanked the many readers from all over the world who evaluated the publications submitted impartially and with professionalism.

Wine brands and designations of origin - Conflicts, mimicry and new paradigms" - Editions Mare & Martin.
Relationships between wine brands and designations of origin are becoming more complex. It turns out that beyond the classic configuration of conflicts between the two legal categories, a clear tendency towards doctrinal osmosis is emerging, in European law and beyond: trademark law acts as a “matrix” to fuel, in concepts and in principles, the protection of designations of origin, while conversely, designations of origin enrich the forms and doctrine of trademark law. In this way, the contributions in this book, taking into account the specifics of the wine sector, offer a new perspective on a question whose dimensions are still far from being examined in full.

Théodore Georgopoulos is a lecturer in law at the faculty of law and political science of the University of Reims, chair of the board of the Institut Georges Chappaz, chair of the international association of lawyers for vine and wine law (AIDV), director of the wine and law programme - Jean Monnet chair, and director of the wine and spirits law review - jus vini.
