Interreg NanoCardio project

Cardiovascular events represent the main cause of mortality around the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of deaths attributable to cardiovascular events is estimated at 17.7 million, that is, 31% of total mortality worldwide. In view of this and, for a few months, the Universities of Gent (UGENT), Mons (UMONS) and Reims (URCA) collaborate in the context of a Interreg FWVL project, a cross-border cooperation program gathering France, Wallonia and Flanders.

This project, entitled NanoCardio, seeks to prevent cardiovascular events, by detecting the vulnerable atheromatous plaques, via a non-invasive imaging method. To date, the project’s total budget amounts to 1 602 677,85 Euros, of which 801 338,91 are funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Finally, note that Nanocardio is also cofinanced by the Universities of Gent, Mons and Reims.

« By bringing closer the expertise of partners of the cross-border zone France, Wallonia and Flanders, NanoCardio aims at developing nanometric multifunctional and biocompatible probes dedicated to the visualisation and the analysis of atheromatous plaques », comment the French, Walloons and Flemish authors. « The objective is to predict as early as possible the evolution of these plaques to allow an appropriate care of the patients. Given that this challenge concerns the public health worldwide, the results of the NanoCardio project could also be transposed to that scale ».

Besides being a scientific research project, NanoCardio also sets the communication in the heart of its concerns. If it comes to life in laboratory, the project also appears on social networks Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter and ResearchGate.
