Training to become an oenologist, a consultant oenologist, a technical sales representative.

The Oenologist National Diploma is a national Diploma issued by the Universities of Dijon, Montpellier, Reims, Talence (Bordeaux) and Toulouse, after a two year course following an Undergraduate Degree.
Can qualify for admission to the 1st year graduates:
- of an Undergraduate Degree in Biological, Chemical, Biochemical or Agricultural Sciences or any other higher education diploma in the same domains that is worth 180 credits,
- on validation of knowledge acquired by experience.
It is worth mentioning that a Specialty "Oenology", as part of the 3rd year of Undergraduate Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Earth and Environment in the URCA opened in 2008. The Degree is accessible to graduates from a 2nd year of an Undergraduate Degree or an advanced vocational diploma (BTS).

Application process: In Reims, the 1st year of the Oenologist National Diploma is restricted to 22 students, out of an average of 150 applications.
The selection counts two phases:
* Phase 1: prescreening of written applications:
The student sends an application before May 15, on blank paper with:
a CV since the High School Leaving Certificate specifying:
• internships carried out in the wine sector (they show the applicant’s motivation and are a strong asset in the application)
• temporary jobs (summer jobs, etc.)
• possible relation with the wine sector
• interests and hobbies
• military situation

A € 15 check covering administrative charges, addressed to the "agent comptable de l'Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne".
On June 15, the applicant knows whether he/she has been selected.

* Phase 2: interview to assess the applicant’s motivation:
For this interview, the jury is composed of oenologists; it takes place during the first couple of weeks in July.
After the interview, 3 lists of names are drafted (might vary according to the number of students who repeat the 1st year after the June exam session):
a list of about 15 definitely selected applicants
a waiting list of about 10 applicants orderly named
a list of non selected applicants
Mid-July the applicant is let known his/her place on the waiting list.

Graduates become production oenologists in wine merchants or cooperatives. With the Diploma, they can also become oenologist consultants, a career involving usual analysis on wine and providing wine growers with advice on how to elaborate products. Technical sales is also an interesting option (fermenting cellar, oenological products). A new sector has been emerging: oenologists in charge of beverages in supermarkets. In this perspective, the Master's Degree in Oenology, Wine from the Champagne Area, Management, Marketing, Regulation and Quality was created in Reims. One of its objectives is to further deepen oenologists’ knowledge and priority is given to oenologists.

Organisation of studies
Studies are organised in semesters and composed of Teaching Units and mandatory internships. The Oenologist National Diploma is granted after 120 credits have been obtained further to the Undergraduate Degree, pursuant to the Decree N°2002-482 from April 8th, 2002. The Diploma is granted to students who validated all the programme’s Teaching Units and Internships.

Teacher mentoring / professional internship
There are two mandatory internships:
- a 3 week minimum shadowing internship to discover the sector during the 1st year;
- a 3 month minimum internship in viticulture and winemaking, at wine growers' (in one period of time or more).
