Social, societal and environmental responsibility: the URCA, a committed university

Climate, protecting biodiversity, energy transition, sustainable management of natural resources, prevention of environmental risks, etc. The challenges linked to our environment are a major concern in our societies.

By including sustainable development and societal responsibility in its global strategy, URCA is making a choice for the future of its region and for society.

“Our engineering school, the ESIReims, is a school committed to a common theme: to enable young people to become players in eco-citizen companies through its 3 courses focused on the ecodesign of more socially responsible packaging; participation in the energy transition; and the integration of the social and civic dimension in the city through urban engineering. It is a driver of change!" insists Eric Boin, Director General of Virojanglor and President of the school council of the ESI Reims.

This ecological transition is also creating jobs in new branches requiring training, specific know-how and cross-disciplinarity.

As such, since 2018 URCA has been managing the campus for plant biorefinery and industrial biotechnology professions and qualifications. This promotes and develops initial or continuing training in the bioeconomy and participates in the creation of new training courses to meet the needs of companies in the sector (Bioeco Academy project).

At the start of the 2020 academic year, a double degree with Sciences Po will be offered to students. This innovative interdisciplinary training will combine the different sciences through the study of the major cross-disciplinary themes of our century including ecological transition, artificial intelligence and big data or even the manipulation of living organisms and their ethical issues. The objective will be to measure and analyse the interactions between human activity and wildlife in order to explore solutions to limit its ecological footprint.

Many actions are now being led by the university: encouraging and developing student initiatives, fostering the development of an entrepreneurial spirit, developing innovative projects with the ecosystem, and inventing solutions to meet economic, social and environmental challenges.

In 2020, the apprenticeship tax collected by the URCA will contribute to investments and the development of training in this area. The URCA is authorised to collect the balance (former out-of-quota share) of the apprenticeship tax for all initial technological and/or professional training.
