Presentation

The MATIM laboratory develops research on materials that are developed, characterised, and modelled at different scales. On small scales, its research focuses on the development and study of materials, nanomaterials, and nanostructures for various industrial or environmental applications. Several methods are used to develop innovative functionalized surfaces, such as sol-gel methods coupled to spin-coating or magneto-electrochemical methods, which enable nanocomposites or nanostructured deposits to be obtained. On a larger scale, the laboratory is interested in the rehabilitation and repair of civil engineering structures for sustainable construction by reinforcing or repairing them using composite materials, for example. The MATIM laboratory also works on advanced materials modelling and develops modelling and numerical simulation tools capable of understanding the links between scales and implementing them on a wide range of solid materials, as well as on heterogeneous civil engineering structures. Finally, to meet the challenges of healthcare, MATIM laboratory is developing research activities in close collaboration with the Reims University Hospital on implantable medical devices and the biomechanics of disability and rehabilitation.

The MATIM laboratory offers a scientific positioning in the field of Engineering Sciences (SPI). It is developing a body of research in materials and engineering while contributing to industrial and climate change, as well as to health issues.

MATIM's research activities are structured around four themes:

What we do

The laboratory stands out for its original experimental techniques and expertise in multi-physics and multi-scale modelling:

  • Electrochemistry in Magnetic Fields
  • Electron beam measurements of dielectric properties.
  • Sol-gel deposition combined with spin-coating process.
  • Characterisation of materials and structures: mechanical tests, nanoindentation, SEM, XRD, etc.
  • Multiphysics and multiscale modelling of materials, manufacturing processes and mechanical components.
  • Development of advanced numerical tools and software (inverse approach (IA), pseudo-inverse approach (PIA), finite element method, inverse identification, meta-models, etc.).

In parallel to purely academic research, MATIM is a laboratory open to its socio-economic environment, through collaborative research contracts and PhD theses funded by companies or in partnership with companies.

  • Conventional Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) (model JEOL JSM 6460LA), equipped with EDXS (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) analysis.
  • Bruker D8 Advance Diffractometer (DRX).
  • Ellipsometer.
  • Magneto-electrochemistry equipment.
  • ARAMIS 2M-3D modular measurement head equipped with 2 digital CCD cameras for non-contact 3D measurement of deformations using image stereo-correlation with ARAMIS software.
  • Nanoindenter XP (CSM Instruments).
